Five years ago, we took an amazing three-week vacation. Instead of staying in hotels, we stayed in small cabins nestled in the woods or small towns. Each place had something in common: the calming effect it had on us. Since one of our first dates almost 30 years ago, we've talked about getting away from it all and living a slower life, but until we came back from that trip, we didn't have a real clear plan. At the end of that trip, we Created a five-year plan that would allow us to begin building our homestead.
Five Years Later
Over the last five years, we've made a lot of changes. Each season we've made changes in the garden, learned new skills, and bought items that would help us now and when we moved. Now here we are right five years later and we have land and a home! We are REALLY building our homestead!
Looking for Property
We have looked a few times in the last couple of years, but as we got closer to the five-year mark this year, we both felt ready to look with purpose. We each had our list of what we wanted and what would be an automatic exclusion. Scott wanted around five acres but I kept saying that was the minimum, and I'd prefer close to ten. Scott wanted a smaller home than our current one. I didn't care as long as the kitchen was larger and it had three bedrooms. We both wanted an area that felt calm, we could see the stars at night and not hear noise all day long.
The Listing Basics
- 3 bedrooms
- 2 bathrooms
- 1,232 sqft of living space (Just slightly smaller than our current home)
- 9.44-acre lot (Close to ten)
Property Overview from the Listing

Eat-in kitchen with large dining space, the kitchen is large with lots of cabinets and counter space! Three great bedrooms. A guest bath off of the hall, and the primary bedroom has its own bath with a large shower! Separate laundry room! Back yard has a covered patio and a big carport. The two-car garage is oversized, and part of it can easily be used as a shop! High ceilings in the garage for parking tall vehicles or to use for your workshop! View wildlife and enjoy peaceful living on this private getaway property!
Empty for Six Years
The information above is what was on the listing page. The listing didn't say the house had been empty for six years, raccoons had taken up residency at some point in the attic and they would not be clearing out the property that had been left behind. The listing also said, "As Is." We weren't sure if there was any wiggle room in the "as-is" but we went ahead and looked at the property and placed an offer. Less than 24 hrs later, our offer was accepted and we closed on the house just six weeks later.
We Have a Well
The property listing did not show that the property had a well. Probably because it is not currently working. All of the components on the outside are rusted and when we looked inside, we found an old, abandoned beehive. We are working to restore the power and make some minor repairs to have the water tested.
